The application process to select the WordCamp Europe 2019 host city is now open! After Leiden, Sofia, Sevilla, Vienna, Paris and now Belgrade, where will WordCamp Europe travel to? Now is your local community’s chance to join a historic lineup of destinations!
Every year since 2013, WordCamp Europe has been organised by a team composed of two main groups: a local team, and a global team. The local team is comprised of members of the host city’s WordPress community, while the global team is built around experienced WordCamp organisers all across Europe, most of whom have participated in one or more of the past events.
Hosting WordCamp Europe is a big responsibility, which is why the local and the global teams work together as one, bringing both an in-depth knowledge of the local community and years of experience.
When will WordCamp Europe 2019 take place?
WordCamp Europe is in June each year, but not the last weekend of June that is too close to summer vacations for many European countries. The options for 2019 are:
- June 6-8
- June 13-15
- June 20-22
You can apply with any of these options in mind; the final date will then be decided after the selection process.
The application survey
Each year we try to improve the application and selection process, so read what follows carefully, even if you have already participated in the past.
Who can apply?
Any team that has organised one or more successful WordCamps in a European city, with at least one in 2016 or 2017.
What is the first step?
We are helping all the candidates so they can build the best application. We do this in the WCEU Slack workspace, so the first step if your team is interested is to email us at host@wp-europe.org to be invited there.
How do we apply?
To apply, please fill out this survey. Note that it is possible to save it partially filled, then come back later to complete it. It will only be final at the end of the application period.
Speaking of which, when does the application period end?
You have until March 31st, at 23:59 CET to apply.
How is the WCEU 2019 host city selected?
We articulated the survey in five sections:
- The first section allows us to get to know the team.
- The second is about the venue and the budget. It is important to note that we will help you along the way to answer these questions, to be sure that all applications are in the right budget range and present the right venue characteristics. We won’t use the data from this section to rank applications and make the selection.
- Section three is about staying in your city, and part four about travelling to your city.
These questions aim entirely at selecting the best destination for attendees. They are objective and measurable data points, and will be used to rank cities and make a selection. - Finally, section five is qualitative information about your city, and we will only use it as a starting point for a conversation in case two or more candidates tie for the first place.
Can I apply with more than one venue?
Yes, as long as they are in the same city. Please fill the survey entirely once for your primary choice of venue, then fill its first two sections again as many times as needed for the other sites. You won’t need to fill sections three to five for secondary applications.
What about transparency?
To guarantee total transparency in the process, all the applicants will receive the same help in the appropriate channel of the WCEU Slack workspace. No question will be considered or answered in a private message.
We will compare the applications across all the questions asked in sections three and four of the survey. For each one, we will rank all answers. The best one will receive four points, the last one zero, and the ones in between two points each.
Our goal is to help all teams filing a receivable application, then select the one that will make the event the most desirable for attendees, both regarding cost, and accessibility.
What happens if my team is selected?
We will select the host city for 2019 by April 15th, 2018 at the latest. A few members of that team will be invited to the current team to participate in the final phase of the organisation of WordCamp Europe 2018 in Belgrade, to become as familiar as possible with the process.
