What does the team do?
This team oversees official events, mentorship programs, diversity initiatives, contributor outreach, and many other ways of growing our WordPress community.
These few previous WordCamp talks tell the story of what the Community Team does:
- A Personal Story: Joining the WordPress Community
- Andrea Middleton, Michelle Frechette, Joe A. Simpson Jr.: WordCamp Kent 2020 Community Panel
- Cate DeRosia: The Unpredictable Value of Community
- Mike Hansen: Community Involvement and Bettering Yourself
When does the team meet?
Community Team deputies host office hours to answer your questions. They take place in #community-events in Slack on Mondays and Wednesdays at 22:00 UTC, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 09:00 UTC.
Community Team Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of every month. Each chat happens twice on the same day to cater to different time zones. Meeting times are 12:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC in #community-team on Slack.
Visit the WordPress.org Community Team homepage make.wordpress.org/community/ for more information. The page lists the dates and times you can join meetings.
I’m new, how do I get set up?
Set up a WordPress.org and Slack account for the Make WordPress Channel.
If you can’t find a video in your own language, come and help make one! Translation is one of the ways you can contribute to WordPress and make a difference for many people.
Existing Meetup and WordCamp organisers
For existing contributors wanting to know more about community and this team, there is a lot of help available through the community-events channel on Slack and the Handbook, as well as videos on the Learn WordPress.org resource.
Diverse Speaker Training Group
Just some of the people involved in the Diverse Speaker Training Group and you might meet at WordCamp Europe.
Jill Binder and Angela Jin from the group share latest plans and how you can get involved.
Have you ever had trouble getting a diverse set of speaker applications for your meetups and WordCamps (in terms of terms gender, race, class, sexuality, ability, age, etc.)? Us too!
The Diverse Speaker Training group (#wpdiversity) has:
- Diverse Speakers Workshops: A series of interactive, hands-on, transformational workshops for people from underrepresented groups in WordPress. These workshops have been proven to triple the number of speaker applications from underrepresented groups
Upcoming live workshops or interactive watch parties
In mid 2021, the group launched two new programs:
- Placement program: Helping people who took the workshop apply for speaker spots in meetups and WordCamps, and helping meetup/WordCamp organizers find more underrepresented voices.
- Allyship program: Helping WordPress events and participants be more welcoming and inclusive.
How can I get involved?
- Reply to any of our WPDiversity posts with your interest
- Or join our meeting on the #community-team channel second and fourth Wednesdays at 17:00-18:00 UTC
- Share the social media posts #WPDiversity by the WordPress Marketing Team
Community Team’s Contributing Working Group
People from different teams and countries come together to discuss ideas in the Community Team Contributing Working Group.
This group (#WPContributors) launched in October 2020. Its is currently working towards ‘enhancing onboarding experiences for new contributors’.
It welcomes new volunteers of all skill levels and disciplines. The average time commitment is 3 plus hours per month, including meetings on the Global Community Slack.
Meetings take place in the #community-team channel on the WordPress Slack on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, at 04:00 UTC and 19:00 UTC each week. [Meetings are currently on hold, but will return soon]
Interested? Join us at one of our meetings, or reach out to Christina Workman in the Community Team Slack @amethystanswers
Our upcoming projects include gathering feedback from contributors, updating onboarding documentation, and facilitating the creation of additional Learn WordPress workshops.
Some of the ways volunteers can help include:
- brainstorming ideas
- talking to contributors about their experiences
- connecting with various Make Teams so we can work in collaboration with them
- editing documentation
- if you want to help but aren’t sure if there’s a role for you, let’s talk and find what fits!
