For the first time ever at WCEU, we’re excited to open the call for workshops. This year we are thrilled to offer this new content format to our WCEU audience, and workshops are a great way to level up skills, work with fellow WordPressers, and share in-depth knowledge. Do you have a workshop idea you want to share at WCEU? We are looking forward to receiving workshop applications, and making this a new, educational and fun experience for everyone.
What types of workshops are we looking for?
We will provide a more hands-on learning experience to our attendees in addition to our regular sessions next year. We invite you to apply to share your knowledge in the form of a workshop.
We will offer two workshop lengths:
- 90 minutes
- 3 hours
You can choose to host a shorter workshop, or a longer deep-dive – let us know which makes more sense for your topic when you apply. If you think your workshop would gain from being a different length, explain why in your application!
We’re currently planning to host somewhere between 50 to 80 attendees per workshop. As space will be very limited, attendees will have to register for those once the schedule is released.
In order to make it a good learning experience for all workshop attendees, we are planning to find teaching assistants who can help participants when stuck, answer questions, and overall make sure that the workshop flows, so you, the host, can mostly focus on your content.
We are looking for a diverse lineup of workshops in a variety of topics and all levels of expertise.
We are planning to include workshops for beginners, as well as advanced topics. Here are some topics our audience might be interested in:
- Development workshops (beginner and intermediate level)
- Advanced Development workshops
- Design and UX workshops
- Community workshops
- Content workshops
- Business workshops
This list is not exhaustive, so feel free to inspire us with your ideas and knowledge. Are you passionate about or an expert on a specific topic? Don’t hesitate to apply!
If you’re looking for more inspiration, we have gathered a list of workshop topics our audience could be interested in on our application website.
What makes a great workshop?
A great workshop will teach attendees a new skill, or improve their understanding of an already familiar topic, use creative exercises to make everyone feel relaxed and involved, and encourage teamwork.
Creating, organizing, and leading a workshop is a lot of hard work. It requires you, as the host, to have clear workshop learning points, and make sure that those learning points are tailored to your target audience. Bring with you materials, to better explain any of the points you are trying to make, and don’t forget to write down what you need for the workshop, as well as, what the attendees need to bring.
Come with a well-structured plan and agenda, so that attendees know what to expect. However, most importantly the workshops, unlike the talks, are meant to get people involved. This is an environment where everyone should feel safe, and be able to speak openly so that we can learn effectively all together.
Do I have to be experienced in hosting workshops to apply?
WordCamp Europe is one of the largest WordPress events in the world, so it is recommended that you have some experience hosting workshops or at least have spoken about the topic before.
When it comes to workshops it’s all about being able to teach people in a digestible format, motivate them to participate, and nourish a positive energy in the room. People will likely ask a lot of questions, so you should be proficient in the subject matter and comfortable speaking in front of a crowd. We will be sharing resources and tips on how to plan and run a successful workshop soon.
When reviewing workshop applications, we will take your previous experience into account. Please share any previously prepared workshop materials, recordings, or testimonials you might have gathered.
What is our application deadline and process?
