Live like a local: Do’s and Dont’s in the city center

Experiencing a city like a local is a fantastic way to gain a deeper appreciation and get the vibe of a new place, especially Athens, which is a city that never sleeps.

Take the time to immerse yourself in the local culture, speak with locals, and ask for directions and suggestions. Visitors discover that Greeks are very friendly and always willing to help.

Start your days by being open to living new experiences, discovering unique and authentic aspects of the city and keeping in mind that Athens has a huge diversity of neighbourhoods and scenery that tourists often overlook.

By exploring neighbourhoods, trying local cuisine, and engaging with locals, you can better understand the city’s history, customs, and way of life. Most importantly, you can develop a deeper connection to the city, welcoming you to feel at home.

We have gathered some tips on what to expect, what you should do on your visit to Athens, and what you should avoid.

Do’s

  • Take a stroll around the neighbourhoods: Athens is full of charming neighbourhoods with unique characteristics. Walk around areas like Exarcheia, Koukaki, Plaka and Kolonaki and discover hidden gems like local cafes, street art, small shops and galleries.
  • Try the street food: Greek street food is both delicious and affordable, and it’s a great way to experience the local cuisine. Try some souvlaki, gyros, or bougatsa.
  • Go to a local market: Athens has several open-air markets where locals shop for fresh produce, fish, and other goods. Head to Varvakios Market and Athinas Street Market and take in a bustling local market’s sights, smells, and sounds.
  • Enjoy the nightlife: Athens is known for its lively nightlife, and there are plenty of places to party like a local. Head to bars and clubs in areas like Gazi, Kerameikos, or Koukaki and dance the night away to Greek and international music sounds.

Don’t’s

  • Don’t rely on taxis: Athens has a great public transportation system, including buses, trams, and the metro. Taxis can be expensive and often get stuck in traffic, so it’s best to plan ahead and use public transport.
  • Don’t skip the side streets: Athens is a very safe city. Don’t be afraid to walk around and try some of the best restaurants, cafes, and shops that are hidden away on side streets and alleyways.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak Greek. While many Greeks speak English, trying to learn a few basic phrases in Greek can be fun! Be sure that locals will appreciate the effort, and it can also enhance your experience.
  • Don’t let your guard down against pickpockets: Unfortunately, like in many major cities, pickpocketing can be a problem in Athens. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and on public transportation.
  • Don’t forget to pack your comfortable shoes and a hat. To fully experience everything that Athens has to offer, it’s important to be ready to walk around and explore on foot. Wear comfortable shoes, wear a hat, and stay hydrated. Athens is a hot city during summer time. Also, always bring a map or GPS-enabled device.
