Call for Host City 2024

Where will WordCamp Europe travel next? Here’s an opportunity for your local WordPress community to join a historic lineup of destinations!

Every year since 2013, WordCamp Europe is organised by a team composed of two main groups: a local team and multiple global teams.

The local team is comprised of members of the host city’s WordPress community, while the global teams are built around experienced WordCamp organisers from across Europe, most of whom have participated in one or more past events.

Hosting WordCamp Europe is a big responsibility. This is why the local and global teams work as one, bringing together in-depth knowledge of the local community and years of experience.

WordCamp Europe takes place in June, excluding the last weekend to avoid interfering with summer vacations in many European countries.

Who can apply?

Any team that has organised one or more successful in-person WordCamps in a European city in the last four years and which community has been active during 2022.

How is the WCEU 2024 host city selected?

For this year, we have tweaked the selection process to concentrate more on the local community and the city instead of deep knowledge about how to organise a successful WordCamp Europe.

The selection of the WordCamp Europe 2024 host city will be based on the overall evaluation of the application, instead of ranking different parts of it. We don’t ask your team to prepare a budget for the whole event, but estimated costs for the proposed venue(s) should be available.

Host city selection is made by the selection committee, which consists of experienced WordCamp Europe organisers from past editions.

To apply, prepare a pitch deck, video or website to convince the selection committee.

The pitch could include for example:

  • Introduction of your local WordPress community
  • Composition of the local team applying
  • Details of proposed venue(s)
  • Details of the city
  • Your ideas on creating another unforgettable WCEU
  • … or anything you want!

In addition to the pitch deck, we ask each team to fill out a short survey where some basic details are asked about the local community, possible venue(s) and the city. The Pitch deck will be attached to the application in the last step.

What is the first step?

Gather your strong and focused local team to send in the application. Prepare the pitch deck and venue proposals with the team.

Our goal is to help all teams create a solid application.

To guarantee equal treatment, all applicants receive the same help. No question is considered or answered privately. To achieve this, we will be hosting anonymous AMA sessions async in question-answer form. The first session will be in November (week 48). All questions and answers will be shared with everyone at the same time.

How do we apply?

To apply, fill out this survey. Note that it is possible to save it partially filled, and then come back later to complete it. It will only be final when the application period ends.

You will need a Google Account to submit this form – if you encounter any problems please get in touch and we’ll be on hand to support.

Speaking of which, when does the application period end? The application period closed on 30 January 2023.

Can I apply with more than one venue?

We encourage you to do it! In fact, the application survey consists of questions about three different venue possibilities. It’s ok if you have only one, but keep in mind that the needs of WCEU are unique so at least two different venue proposals make your application stronger.

What happens if my team is selected?

We will select the host city for 2024 by 6 March 2023 at the latest.

A few members of that team will be invited by the current team to observe and/or participate in the final phase of organisation for WordCamp Europe 2023 in Athens to become as familiar as possible with the process.

The host city for 2024 will be announced during closing remarks in Athens.
