As you have probably already seen from the article about traditional Serbian cuisine, Belgrade offers an amazing choice of tasty food for you to try. However, these dishes are usually prepared in restaurants, where it takes some time to sit down and enjoy the experience. While this is a must try, there will probably be moments during your stay when you will be in a hurry. So, let’s take a look at some Serbian street food that’s just as tasty as the slowly prepared dishes and can save you time when you’re on the go.
Pljeskavica
Probably the most iconic Serbian dish. Pljeskavica can be found everywhere, but the best way to eat it is at a food stand. It’s usually made from minced meat patties, a mixture of pork, beef and very rare lamb. It’s served in a bun, somun or something similar to a tortilla, with hot pepper flakes, garlic sauce, cheese or cabbage salad.
Don’t forget to ask for Urnebes “Hurly-Burly“ Salad if you like spicy food. There are a variety of options for you to choose from – the pljeskavica could be stuffed with cheese, or it can be formed as a sandwich, or made from smoked meat, or cooked very spicy with onions, like the “Leskovačka Pljeskavica”. No matter what your choice is, you won’t be disappointed! Just look for the sign “Leskovački Roštilj” and enjoy.
Ćevapi
Also considered a national Serbian dish, ćevapi is prepared with grilled minced meat. A portion usually consists of 5-10 pieces, grilled with the addition of garlic, onion and different spices.
Ćevapi can also be served in bread or just as a portion, with chopped onions, sour cream, kajmak, ajvar, feta cheese, minced red pepper, and salt. Avoid asking for ketchup or mayonnaise because it might be considered an insult. 😀
Šiš ćevap
Meat stew with grilled vegetables, which can also be ordered as a portion or in somun, a special kind of bread. What is the actual difference between pljeskavica, ćevapi and šiš ćevap?
Pljeskavica and ćevapi are prepared from a meat mixture with slightly different ingredients. Šiš ćevap is actually the similar shape as pljeskavica, but prepared from the mixture used for ćevapi.
Burek
Burek is the most popular breakfast food in Serbia and is served in most pastry shops. It can have a variety of fillings, like cheese, greens, spinach and so on. But minced beef is definitely the most famous filling.
To feel like a real local, you should also ask for yogurt when ordering burek. Serbian yogurt is something that you probably never tried before and we definitely recommend it!
If you would rather try some healthy fast food, Ušće Shopping Mall is just a 5 minute walk from the conference’s venue. Here, you’ll find a lot of fast food restaurants offering a huge variety of food, including Asian and Italian. The best thing, though, is that you can sit there and enjoy your healthy meal.
As you can see, Serbian street food is also a great choice, no matter if you have to run to catch the next interesting talk at WordCamp Europe or you just want to enjoy the local vibe while staying in Belgrade. In addition, here is a secret tip – if you are staying somewhere near the venue in Novi Beograd, keep in mind that the best šiš ćevap is being served in Goce Delčeva. Hope these tasty ideas make your time in Belgrade even more fun!
