Contributor Day Information

What is Contributor Day?

Contributor Day is a chance for attendees to contribute to WordPress, collaborate with new and existing contributors, and learn about the different ways to get involved in the project.

The WordPress project is made up of a number of Make WordPress teams working on areas ranging from core and theme review, to design and marketing.

Contributor Day is for everyone. A variety of skills are needed, and all skills and levels of experience are welcome. Find the full list of the teams you could join and their introductions.

How will my skills help on the day?

Contributor Day is for everyone. A variety of skills are needed, and all skills are welcome.

A Contributor Day is not like a job interview or workplace and does not have the associated pressure. It is a friendly and supportive environment, with a shared vision to develop and maintain the WordPress open-source project.

All levels of experience and expertise across a range of areas, including but not only development, are essential for diversifying open source projects. It is the best way to ensure WordPress is useful to as many people as possible and can be used by everyone.

How do I join Contributor Day?

Note: Tickets to Contributor Day are no longer available.

You will receive an email from the WCEU organizing team shortly before the event day, with all the information you’ll need to take part, including links to the Slack channels and Zoom meetings for each team.

I’ve signed up, what’s next?

Join the Making WordPress Slack

Most communication during Contributor Day will take place in the Making WordPress Slack instance. Make sure you have access to this before Contributor Day to help avoid any technical issues on the day of the event.

Once you’ve joined, make sure you join the #contributor-day channel. This is where the general discussion and announcements will take place!

Some Make WordPress teams are hosting special office hours prior to Contributor Day. Join them to say Hi or to get help with setting up the tools you might need. Find out the schedule for office hours.

If you are unfamiliar with Slack, we have prepared a video instruction and written step-by-step guide on joining the Making WordPress Slack.

Read the onboarding guides

The Make WordPress teams use different tools for their contribution work, but as a start all contributors will need a WordPress.org profile and access to the project’s Slack workspace. Contributing to some teams will require setting up a local development environment.

We have prepared a series of guides to help you get set up with these tools. Whether you are a new contributor or an existing contributor who wants to refresh your memory of the tools, you might find these guides useful.

Find the onboarding guides here.

Discover which teams to join

There are a lot of teams, and we don’t expect everyone to know which one to join before the event. Visit the Contributor Day page to find out more about the different teams and what they do.

To help you decide which team to join, you can also try out the Contributor Orientation Tool – answer a few quick questions to find out which teams best match your experience and interests.

Check out the Contributor Stories series on the WCEU blog sharing contributing stories from members of the global WordPress community:

Glossary

New to contributing and unsure of some of the terms being used? The WordCamp Europe team has produced a glossary to help you get started.

Contributor – A registered attendee of Contributor Day who can join one or more teams throughout the day and use skills to help with tasks and goals of that team.

Onboarding – The process of bringing new Contributors onto a team. For all teams, the first steps are the same: Register at WordPress.org, register at the official WordPress Slack and join the team’s Slack channel. The next steps vary, as each team has its own workflows and tools for managing tasks.

OrganiserA volunteer who helped organise Contributor Day.
