On entering the country, this is confirmed with a message from your provider along the lines of: \u201cWelcome to Germany! And could the majority of your needs be met using free Wi-Fi? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Free Wi-Fi (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin.de\/en\/wifi\/4445570-4479120-wifi-free-wifi-berlin-locations-of-hotsp.en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Free Wi-Fi<\/a>, typically with no registration, is available at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sch\u00f6nefeld (SXF) and Tegel (TXL) airports<\/li><li>Train stations Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), Ostbahnhof, Gesundbrunnen, S\u00fcdkreuz, Spandau<\/li><li>All U-Bahn (underground) stations on the \u2018BVG network\u2019 except Bismarckstra\u00dfe, Schlo\u00dfstra\u00dfe, and Rathaus Steglitz<\/li><li>Central Bus Stations ZOB and Ostbahnhof<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Regional train stations (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin.de\/en\/airports-and-stations\/1833015-2932875-regional-train-stations-in-berlin.en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Regional train stations<\/a> <\/li><li>Estrel Congress Center, the WCEU venue <\/li><li>Hotels and Airbnbs<\/li><li>Cafes and fast food locations, either free or with a small purchase<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s possible to download maps and use them offline to navigate to places not included above, such as tourist sites or restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your time in Berlin is primarily spent in the locations above, you may not need a German SIM card. Leave Wi-Fi open on your phone to detect available networks, and be sure to turn off data access and national\/international roaming to prevent unexpected charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Duration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How long are you staying in Berlin or Germany? If only staying a few days for the conference and traveling to\/from Berlin, and you have minimal mobile needs not met by free Wi-Fi, look into the possibility of extending your current plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>T-Mobile USA has an International Pass, plus Simple Choice, Magenta and ONE programs for those traveling.<\/li><li>Vodafone UK has Global Roaming Plus for those going outside the normal coverage area.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You might find something similar. Weigh your options and costs, and don\u2019t be afraid to contact your mobile provider\u2019s customer service with questions. It\u2019s better to be clear and informed than surprised and sorry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scenario<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you land at Tegel airport, need to get a taxi to the Airbnb or hotel and then spend the majority of your time socialising and working at the WCEU venue or your accommodation, want to see the Berlin Wall and go to a biergarten, and back to the airport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use the airport Wi-Fi to communicate with your Airbnb host and get an Uber, or catch a taxi cab outside the terminal and go to the hotel, use the venue Wi-Fi, download maps to navigate to the Berlin Wall and biergarten, use the restaurant Wi-Fi if needed, and then use the hotel\/Airbnb Wi-Fi to hail an Uber or taxi and go back to the airport. None of this requires a German SIM card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2019.europe.wordcamp.org\/files\/2019\/06\/magenta-starter.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10595\" width=\"337\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europe.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/magenta-starter.png 712w, https:\/\/europe.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/magenta-starter-210x300.png 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><figcaption>Prepaid starter pack from Telekom\/T-Mobile<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting a German SIM card<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many who debate getting a local SIM card (also called &#8216;Handykarte&#8217;) are staying in Berlin or Germany for more than a few days, plus one or more of the following reasons: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Need mobile access everywhere, not just where it\u2019s free &#8211; for navigation, for apps, for use as a portable hotspot, for work, for family, for emergencies, for freedom;<\/li><li>Want to keep the SIM for future use in Germany\/EU and know what\u2019s involved in maintaining it;<\/li><li>Understand the German language, are willing to use Google translate or similar, or know someone who could help. Top-up, online management and network messages are in German. There is no option for English.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Factors to consider when choosing a SIM card:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Convenience: Where to purchase and how to activate<\/li><li>Speed<\/li><li>Cost<\/li><li>Coverage<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to get the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>German mobile service providers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three main providers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Telekom aka T-Mobile (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telekom.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Telekom<\/a><\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Telekom aka T-Mobile (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telekom.de\/\" target=\"_blank\"> aka T-Mobile<\/a>: Best coverage, fastest speed (4G\/LTE), good service, most expensive, reported to be selective when accepting passports, e.g., preferring those from Australia, US, Canada, China<br>(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Congstar (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congstar.de\/prepaid\/\" target=\"_blank\">congstar<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ja! (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamobil.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">ja!<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Lebara (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/mobile.lebara.com\/de\/en\/shop-suche\" target=\"_blank\">Lebara<\/a>)<\/li><li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vodafone.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a><\/strong>: Second-best coverage, fastest speed (4G\/LTE), known brand name, good service, mid-range cost.<br>(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Fyve (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fyve.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fyve<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lidl.de\/de\/lidl-connect\/c15264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Lidl Connect (opens in a new tab)\">Lidl Connect<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Lycamobile (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lycamobile.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lycamobile<\/a> in English, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Otelo (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.otelo.de\/handytarife\/prepaid-tarife\/handy-karte\" target=\"_blank\">Otelo<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Rossmann Mobil (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rossmann-mobil.de\/service\/nano-sim-karte.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rossmann Mobil<\/a>)<\/li><li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"O2 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.o2online.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a><\/strong>: Better coverage since merger with E-Plus, variable service and speed, least expensive, most flexible in accepting identification\/passports from all countries.<br>(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ALDI TALK (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alditalk.de\/basis-prepaid-tarif-sim-karte\" target=\"_blank\">ALDI TALK<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"blau (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blau.de\/e-shop\/tarif\/blau-surf-m-prepaid\" target=\"_blank\">blau<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"K-Mobil (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.k-classic-mobil.de\/selfcare\/static\/page\/tariffs?s=tariff\" target=\"_blank\">K-Mobil<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"NettoKOM (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nettokom.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">NettoKOM<\/a>, <a aria-label=\"Ortel (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ortelmobile.de\/en\/sim-card\/order\/sim-card-with-eur20-credit.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ortel<\/a> in English, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tchibo (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tchibo.de\/prepaid-tarif-c400035511.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tchibo<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"WhatsApp SIM (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsappsim.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">WhatsApp SIM<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"yourfone (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yourfone.de\/vB\/prepaidtarife\" target=\"_blank\">yourfone<\/a>) <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All other mobile offerings are resellers (listed in parentheses) who are using main providers on a sometimes slower 3G network and offer little or no customer service if you need assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What you need<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>A compatible device<\/strong> that is unlocked and has the correct band of 800\/900\/1800 mHz. Not sure? Check your device at: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frequencycheck.com\/countries\/germany\">Frequency Check<\/a><\/li><li><strong>20 euros in cash<\/strong>, in case some stores do not accept cards<\/li><li><strong>Passport<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>German address<\/strong>: Address of your hotel, hostel, Airbnb or friend<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The last two are needed for identity verification, after which your SIM card is unlocked and activation is complete. This is required due to a counter-terrorism initiative in effect since July 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Activation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three ways to verify your identity, but availability depends on which SIM you select and where you buy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>In person<\/strong>: Verification completed at time of SIM card purchase. Fastest activation, usually within 15-30 minutes.<\/li><li><strong>WebID\/VideoID\/OnlineID<\/strong>: Verification done by completing an online form, submitting a copy of your passport or presenting your passport via video. Activation varies &#8211; some report a few hours; others say up to 48 hours.<\/li><li><strong>Post Ident<\/strong>: Fill in a form and present your passport at the post office, which is then forwarded. Slowest activation, depends on mail delivery.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"631\" src=\"https:\/\/2019.europe.wordcamp.org\/files\/2019\/06\/media-markt-1024x631.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/europe.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/media-markt-1024x631.png 1024w, https:\/\/europe.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/media-markt-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/europe.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/media-markt-768x473.png 768w, https:\/\/europe.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/media-markt-487x300.png 487w, https:\/\/europe.wordcamp.org\/2019\/files\/2019\/06\/media-markt.png 1244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where to buy a SIM card<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are lots of places to buy a SIM card, and we\u2019ve listed them along with pros and cons of each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Tegel (TXL) Airport<\/strong>: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Capi Electronics in Terminal A (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin-airport.de\/en\/travellers-txl\/shops-restaurants-and-services\/shops-a-z\/a-g\/capi\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Capi Electronics in Terminal A<\/a> is open from 6:00-21:00 daily. Staff speak English and other languages, fast activation, has options from different providers but perhaps not the best prices. There are no shops in Schoenfield (SXF) Airport. <\/li><li><strong>Direct from Telekom, Vodafone and O2<\/strong>: Many locations around Berlin, open during normal business hours, staff likely speak English or another language, fast activation, but only has options from their own brand.<\/li><li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/handytarife.saturn.de\/tarife\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Media Markt (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/tarife.mediamarkt.de\/tarife\/\" target=\"_blank\">Media Markt<\/a><\/strong>: Many locations, longer hours than Telekom\/Vodafone\/O2, staff speak English or another language, fast activation, have options from all providers for a range of price points.<\/li><li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ALDI (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aldi-nord.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">ALDI<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Kaufland (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaufland.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kaufland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lidl.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Lidl (opens in a new tab)\">Lidl<\/a> supermarkets<\/strong>: Younger people speak English, you need to activate yourself online in German via WebID\/VideoID\/OnlineID, and time to activation is variable (some report a few hours, some up to 24-48 hours), only have options from their brand. <strong>REWE supermarkets<\/strong> have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewe.de\/service\/handykarten\/\">top-up cards for several brands<\/a>. <\/li><li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rossmann.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rossmann drugstore chain<\/a>, kiosks, gas stations<\/strong>: Many locations, you need to speak German, activation unspecified, options are varied. <\/li><li><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tchibo coffee store chain (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tchibo.de\/tchibo-berlin-ci452.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tchibo coffee store chain<\/a><\/strong>: A few locations, staff may only speak German, activation time depends on knowledge of person helping you, only has <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.apnchanger.org\/Germany#Tchibo_mobil\">Tchibo Mobil<\/a> \u2018Prepaid SIM\u2019 option (do not get Smartphone SIM). <\/li><li><strong>Online<\/strong>: Cheaper and convenient if you plan ahead and have an address in Germany because you complete activation online so the SIM is unlocked and sent. However, offers posted online are usually only in German and not the most current. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to buy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What we recommend<\/strong>: Go to a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Saturn (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saturn.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn<\/a> or <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Media Markt (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamarkt.de\/markt\/berlin\" target=\"_blank\">Media Markt<\/a> location, tell them that you need a <strong>prepaid SIM card starter pack<\/strong> with X GB of data (how much is typical) for X days (how long you\u2019re staying), and have them show you some options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 1-2 GB of data in combination with free Wi-Fi is sufficient for most people staying a week or less, unless planning to watch or work with a lot of videos and\/or images. Heavy users may want to check out <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Pro 7 Surf Stick (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.surfstick-info.de\/pro-7-surfstick\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pro 7 Surf Stick<\/a>, which measures by time and not by volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going to a large chain store ensures you find staff speaking different languages, lots of choice, good prices, acceptance of cards and cash, fast activation and customer support if you need assistance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the SIM card is activated but you need to turn your device off and back on again so it re-sets and recognises the swap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UK SIM card<\/strong>: There\u2019s also a non-German option if you or a friend are stopping in or living in the UK. A Vodafone prepaid SIM card can be bought at the airport, activation is immediate, everything is in English and can be managed online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Big Value Bundle costs 10 GBP (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vodafone.co.uk\/mobile\/pay-as-you-go-plans\/big-value-bundles\" target=\"_blank\">Big Value Bundle costs 10 GBP<\/a> and gives you 3GB of data, unlimited text and 250 minutes.
