WCEU 2019 Call for Speakers
You can bet your sorry laptop that we just opened the Call for Speakers. We know that for WordCamp Europe 2019, as in previous years, we will receive many inspiring and valuable talk applications, and our favourite task is to read them all and select those who will be speaking.
What topic should I apply with?
We accept and encourage ALL topics related to WordPress and Web Design/Development. The charm of WCEU is that we welcome a diverse lineup of talented speakers to provide value to our broad audience.
One of our focuses for next year is to line up more front-end/JavaScript frameworks talks. We heard your wishes loud and clear in our community survey, with the largest number of survey responses coming from developers.
We’re hoping to receive a variety of front-end talks, so please apply if you are a developer or have a technical talk to share at WCEU. That’s what our audience is looking for.
However, this shouldn’t discourage anyone who wants to apply with a different subject. We want quality talks that interest all types of WordPressers, so we are also looking for Marketing, Business, Blogging and anything else you believe will appeal to the WCEU community.
We are an open and welcoming community that encourages speaker applications from all over the world. Even if you are new to WordPress, tell us how you are making the web a better place.
Here are some of the most requested topics to inspire you:
- Advanced development
- Accessible design
- SEO
- Project management
- Storytelling
- Agile frameworks
- Culture
- Scaling up the business
- Success stories
- Working remotely ‘best practices’
How long should my presentation be?
We are planning the following formats for sessions:
- Long talks – 40 minutes in total, breaking down to around 30 mins for talk & 10 mins for questions.
- Lightning talks – 10 minutes each, grouping related topics together.
Similar to WCEU 2018 in Belgrade, we plan to have multiple tracks. Each slot in the schedule will be one hour. Content will take up to 40 minutes of each hour, which gives attendees 20 minutes after each session to switch tracks, grab a cup of coffee, and chat with other attendees.
Do I need to be an experienced speaker to apply?
It is an advantage to have experience as a speaker when answering a Call for Speakers. When reviewing speaker applications, we will take previous speaking experience into account. If you have a few WordCamps lined up to add to your speaking experience before WordCamp Europe, but after you send in your application, be sure you tell us that too.
Speaking in front of a large audience can be overwhelming, even for experienced speakers, and we want to lend a helping hand. This year, the content team will be sharing resources and tips on how to put together a successful presentation, as well as how to be more comfortable on stage.
If you haven’t already, there is still time to speak at your local WordCamp or Meetup as practice. Here is a list of all upcoming WordCamps.
What is the application deadline and process?
The Call for Speakers will be open until 7 January.
Important: If you are thinking about sending us a workshop proposal, or if you want to send a workshop proposal in addition to your talk, we will announce and open the workshop call next week, so it’s not long to wait!
Here is what the application process looks like:
- Call for Speakers will be open until 7 January
- We’ll be selecting speakers from 7 January until late February
- Selected speakers will be informed starting 1 March
- Speaker announcements will start mid to late March
