It’s time to welcome our fifth group of WordCamp Europe speakers! They’ll be sharing best practices in security, performance, and development tools. Put your hands together for Borek Bernard, Otto Kekäläinen, Oleksandr Strikha, Mark Jaquith, and Miriam Schwab.
Borek Bernard – Git in 10 minutes
If you know you should be using version control for your WordPress projects but haven’t started yet then “Git in 10 minutes” is for you. Borek, a developer on VersionPress who is passionate about proper tooling, will show you that Git is not scary and that you can actually get started in under 10 minutes.
Otto Kekäläinen – Improving WordPress performance with XDebug and PHP profiling
As a software developer and the CEO of Seravo Oy, Otto has valuable insight into both the technical and business needs of a web project. At WordCamp Europe, he will discuss “Improving WordPress performance with XDebug and PHP profiling.” He’ll explain how to use XDebug with Webgrind, how to find potential optimisation targets, show examples of real cases when XDebug helped fix a performance problem and also explain what XDebug is not suitable for and what can be used instead. If you are not a developer, you’ll learn what XDebug is capable of and when to ask a developer to use it.
Oleksandr Strikha – Web Fonts Performance
Oleksandr is a technical leader of WordPress projects who has designed and led the development of some of the largest content platforms and startups within Scandinavia. Web fonts are a key factor in the speed and lightness of web applications, something which is especially important in the era of mobile devices that we live in. In “Web Font Performance,” Oleksandr will talk about the general problems of loading and rendering fonts in different browsers, and also tools that help solve these problems.
Mark Jaquith – Security is a Process
Mark is a Lead Developer for WordPress core and has been working on WordPress since 2004. In his talk, you will learn that “Security is a Process” and a mindset, not merely a plugin that you install. You’ll then learn how to best protect your sites and yourself from the multitude of threats they face on the Wild Wild Web.
Miriam Schwab – WordPress security for all: you won’t believe how simple it can be
In “WordPress security for all: you won’t believe how simple it can be,” Miriam is set to share insights that her and her team at illuminea have picked up after a decade of hosting and maintaining WordPress sites. She’ll explain a few simple measures that site owners can take to cover 90% of security issues. Miriam will also provide an overview of tools and tweaks that can harden and protect your sites even more.
